Swedish Meatballs

Outside the Ski Lodge Engelberg dining room, the chalkboard read: S.O.S., Swedish Meatballs!, “Cheesecake”.
Intriguing to say the least. Linnea Johnson from Stockholm sank down in the booth next to me. “SOS is a very traditional Swedish appetizer,” she told me, explaining that it stands for smör, ost and sill (butter, cheese and herring), all of which are layered atop crisp bread and washed down with a shot of savory schnapps.
As we filed into the candle-lit dining room, snowflakes fell from the sky. So many, in fact, that the Engelberg-Titlis lifts hadn’t been able to run at all that day. Valley-bound, our merry band of skiers found ourselves huddled inside the cozy booths of the Ski Lodge, belting out drinking songs.
