Red House

I pull into the driveway of the Red House in late April after a long stint in Alaska. A small human with shaggy brown hair wearing muck boots and shorts runs up to me. “Morgan, Morgan! Welcome home. Can I help you with your things? Can we cook something?”

This is my 3-year-old neighbor, Blaine. He and his parents Danny and Chloe share the bottom floor of an eclectic five-apartment house on the Linn Ranch in Wilson, WY, with my partner, Gavin Hess, and I. Chloe runs a flower business out of the third section of the bottom floor that shares a wall with our bedroom.

There is a puddle that fills the driveway, affectionately referred to as Linn Lake. Archie (age 8) and Adell (age 9) are towing each other around the oversized puddle in a neon orange saucer. This beloved puddle is an annual event, marking the start of spring as the snow begins to melt and refuses to drain from the driveway. Now it’s the source of spring beach days for the whole house.
