Queen of the Lyngen Alps with Hedwig Wessel and Niko Schirmer

Words: Lily Krass Ritter

With the hot days of summer on the horizon, it’s as good a day as ever to melt into the dark, winter days up in Norway’s Lyngen Alps. In this short film with Nikolai Schirmer and FWT Champion Hedwig Wessel, the two make the most of the dark January days in Norway, going after the massive south face of Nállangáisi (Queen of the Lyngen Alps).
Schirmer had skied the west face before, but hadn't been able to line up a weather window to safely ski the behemoth south face. So what better time to give it a shot than the months where the sun never rises?
Watching the two shred steep lines in pitch black with headlamps feels like playing a video game, and when the endless rosy glow of morning, afternoon and evening illuminate the slopes just enough to open it up, it’s clear that January in Norway just might be the best kept secret around.
